Abstract
Tree canopy transpiration was measured by sap flow gauges in three Scots pine stands, that had experienced different types and amounts of deposition loads combined with, in one stand, extreme rates of nitrogen fertilisation. Water stress, hydraulic architecture, and heart wood formation were studied to locate possible deposition related limitations on tree water relations. Species composition, LAI, and biomass of forest floor vegetation were investigated. Transpiration measured for the most important species by porometry were scaled up to the stand level via partial LAIs. The sum of tree canopy and forest floor transpiration was similar for the three ecosystems, only the ratio between the two components differed. The ground vegetation seems to have a compensating function for the total amount of stand transpiration There was no indication of higher water stress in the trees of the polluted stand.
