  • Abstract
The protozoa of a mull beech forest near Kassel (W.-Germany) were investigated on three different sites which represent a soil gradient from basalt to limestone. In addition soils are characterized by different moisture and pH values. Protozoa abundance and biomass were high on the hill (basalt) and middle site (mosaic of basalt and limestone) and were comparitatively low at the bottom of the hill (limestone). This distribution pattern is explained by the fact that protozoa prefer weakly acidic soils rather than almost neutral ones (bottom site). A decrease of moisture and increase of pH values caused a decrease in abundance and biomass on all sites.
