  • Abstract
Species number, abundance and biomass as well as proportions of feeding groups of free-living nematodes inhabiting beech forest soils of Goettinger Wald (mull on limestone), Solling (moder on sandstone) and Kleiner Gudenberg, near Zierenberg (mull on a range from basalt to limestone), West Germany, are compared. The Solling sites turned out to be poorer with respect to species composition than the investigated mullsites (29 vs. 61 and 54 species). Nematode abundance of Solling moder sites (2,5-3,3 x 10 hoch 6 ind./m2) exceeds density of mull sites at Goettinger Wald and Kleiner Gudenberg. Biomass, however proves to be higher at mull sites (0,50-1,45 gfw/m2). Mull as well as moder beech wood sites are dominated by fungivorous species with respect to abundance. Biomass is dominated by omnivorous nematodes which reached a minimum of 50% of the entire nematode biomass in all investigated beech wood soils, except in the unlimed Solling site, where omnivores are present in less numbers.
