  • Abstract
Excluding the damage of acid rain, the economical situation of the forest enterprises in the Federal Republic of Germany is unfavourable. Today's relative timber price is lower than in 1955 and the annual cut didn't raise because of the sustained yield forest management. There are four components of economic effects due to acid rain: - hihger costs and lower income - increment reduction - incidental felling - timber market problems. Each of these aspects can hinder the profit; this was shown in model-calculations for the spruce management class. Even worse will be the probable combination of these affects. The conclusions of this article are: 1. The ability of the forest enterprises to realise the necessary fertilisation and special silvicultural treatment will be very small, because of financial weaknese. The financial aid by the government can not significantly change this situation. 2. Increment reduction and incidential felling are even today followed by losses, although it is impossible to show this in the balance- sheet. 3. Exploiting the standing volume leads to immediate cash flow, but the rehabilitation will cost lots of this amount. 4. The storage reduction is followed by problems to ensure a sufficient supply of timber, because during the replanting of destroyed forests the increment has to be higher than the felling rate. 5. Dropped timber prices directly reduce the financial results of the forest enterprises and the total timber sale will be affected. Over all the situation of the forest enterprises will change to the worse and economical motivations for sustained forest management will seldomly be applied by private forest owners.
