The article contains definitions of sustained yield - including ecological functions - and describes economical criterions such as profit or loss, liquidity, success in rationalization. The problems of profit-and-loss accounting in forestry enterprises are discussed. Due to the decreasing timber prices and increasing costs of labour it is very difficult to preserve the stock of valuable timber and forest capital. Therefore the profitability of forestry enterprises has gone down in recent decades. In this situation the leaders have to decide if more of the mature crop should be cut, which methods of rationalzation should be carried out and which investments in silviculture should be put back. Economical methods - inter alia border interest rate - can help to find the best way for overcoming the difficult crisis.
