In the project presented here, the overwintering and the subsequent development of beech cuttings could be improved. In the propagation with cuttings of beech it could be confirmed that a substrate mixed with forest soil used in appropriate containers, produce good results in regard to taking root and overwintering. Within two to three years almost 2 meter high plants which are marketable, can be grown. Both end cuttings as well as internodial cuttings can be used as the basic material. Cuttings which are planted in July need two to four months to take root Cuttings planted in box beds and covered with leaves can be transplanted the following spring in open beds or in pots. The plants also developed very well in the Spencer-Lemaire nursing containers and surprisingly showed no root deformities after two years. Additional investigations will show which factors are decisive for the successful overwintering of beech cuttings.
