  • Abstract
Localities of ancient charcoal burning - so called charcoal pits- occur scattered in many woodlands. Remaining debris of charcoal can be analysed referring to the tree species they belong to. In natural forest reserves of Northrhine-Westfalia, comparison was made between charcoal inventory and actual tree species composition, which resulted in a far reaching correspondance. The conclusion is that charcoal-burners used all wood species. Therefore the inventory of charcoal reflects like indirect forest archieves the composition of ancient forests in a quite corresponding way.
