The necessity of multidisciplinary study of upper mountain forests of the Carpathians Mountain system which is an important element of their nature belance regulation and provides the sustainable development of the region is shown. The aim and tasks of a pentalateral international project titled "Carpathians upper mountain forests: management and conservation for promotion of sustainable regional development" (2001-2002), supported by the Carpathian Foundation, are characterised. The scientific and practical importance of the project is discussed. Participants, interaction mechanisms and some results obtained up to now are given.
