Abstract
Birch with a 10 % share in the German veneer industry is ranking second among all produced species. For veneer log buyers not only dimension, length and the absence of visible defects are important, but logs with a light, whitish colour is what they are looking for. Birch is not only growing in Finland. New areas and sources have to be developed to fulfil customers demand for even coloured surfaces. The share of North-Eastern European suppliers is increasing as long as they can match quality requirements. Stable veneer prices unitl 1998 have been reduced by growing importants from Eastern European countries. Birch does perfectly fit the actual trend of light coloured, dense species. Despite changes in fashion it will always keep its position as an attractive species for the furniture industry. To raise attractivity, production of high quality logs for slicing purposes has to be enforced.
