In the 19th centuries numerous German travellers, researchers and foresters worked in the south-east Asian World Powers' colonies of those times. Up to now, the majority of these colonial forest pioneers have received scant notice and have only been sporadically mentioned in specilized literature. The first part of this contribution deals with the Indonesian countries (formerly the Dutch Indies), India and Burma.
