The State Forest Administration of Hungary was comprehensively restructured when the borders fell. 37% of the total 1,7 million hectares of woodlands were privatized and almost 90% of the forest remaining in state-owned property (935,000 ha) are now being managed in 19 forest enterprises as legal stock associates. In the personnel, production and technical development sectors, they are almost run autonomously. The property rights, however, have been signed over to an official board of Trust Directors, and the State Privatizing and Trust Administration Office is responsible for supervising and controlling the corporations. Silvicultural conditions and economic results are described by the 19 forest enterprises as being average.
