Abstract
In 1996, Austria reorganized its 560.000 ha of state forests into a stock corporation; clearly defining both the economic and ecological goals. This article describes the difficult transition process, outlining the individual political and contextual preparatory stages and their execution. The enterprise concept is also presented, which includes reducing the number of forest enterprises from 50 to 25, and the forest districts from 250 to 150. Further focal points entail changes in the management structure and improved communications and enterprise culture. In years past, roughly 219 million shillings (DM 32 million) were accrued annually. The paper also outlines the work which still remains to be done. On the whole, the chosen course of action is viewed as very successful - and there really was no other alternative.
