New multiple use forests of about 30.000 ha. are planned for the most urbanised, western parts of the Netherlands. Because of soil conditions, poplar, willow and alder might dominate, unlike existing forests, dominated by conifers. Uncertainty about recreational attraction of such new forests prompted research into the perception of soft-wood forests. This paper reports a pilot study for testing methods of measuring experience and valuation, and a main research by interviewing visitors at selected forest sites with tree species similar to new forests. The results indicate, that experience value may be quite high under certain conditions. Recommendations are presented that may be useful to realise recreational potencies.
