At prevous IUFRO meetings, the author looked into the need for erogonomic research in forestry in tropical developing countries (Strehlke, 1971, 1981 and 1986). He was also involved in the courses organised by the Dutchfunded Programme for the Promotion of Ergonomics in the Tropics (PET), held in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988. In 1988 and 1989, he participated in the preparation of plans for a Special Programme for Forestry Working Environment and Techniques (FWET) through the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Against this background, progress made to introduce ergonomic research in forestry in the developing countries since the 18th IUFRO World Congress, held in 1986, is briefly discussed and conclusions are drawn for future research in this field.
