  • Abstract
Variability in the methods used to collect and report information from operational studies of forest machines has produced a knowledge base that is inconsistent and fragmented. Using incompatible formats to organize information makes it difficult or impossible to build a comprehensive knowledge base. This decrease the usefulness of the knowledge and results in unnecessary duplication of effort. This paper discusses the problems associated with nonstandard data collection and reporting procedures. Current efforts addressing the problem in North America are also discussed. The problem is international in scale and will require an aggressive, concerted effort on the part of the forest engineering community of standard procedures are to be developed and used.
