Not all legumes can nodulate. A summary of those woody genera that are known to nodulate is given, based on a taxonomic framework. Where there is doubt or lack of information, suggestions are made as to which genera merit most urgent attention. Even if a woody legume has the genetic capacity to nodulate, it may not do so under field conditions. Climatic, edaphic and microbiological constraints to nodulation are outlined. The problems of measuring nitrogen fixation by woody legumes in the field are briefly discussed. The extent to which fixation may occur in different environments is tentatively indicated.
