Actinorhizal tree and shrub species actively fix nitrogen in the environments in which they grow. As a result of this activity they contribute significantly to soil fertility and early soil development. Use of Actinorhizal species could improve forest production and would be especially valuable in agroforestry programs. Actinorhizal species have been under-exploited in comparison to nitrogen-fixing legume tree species for a number of reasons. However, with the accumulation of additional basic research information about actinorhizal species, their use will justifiably increase in the future.
