Abstract
Among the South American countries, only Brazil and Chile have developed significant reforestation activites for industrial uses. However, the levels of wood consumption are many times larger than their present man-made forests can supply. The gap has been filled with timber harvested from the natural forest reserves. In order to release the pressure on natural forest ecosystems, man-made forests need to be increased both in planted area and productivity. Research to generate new technology is essential but it has not been sufficient yet to enhance wood supply at desirable levels. More efficient management methods and the use of more productive genetic stocks must be extended to the rural communities across the countries. Important marketting opportunities must be oppened in order to establish dependable production forestry operations.
