Abstract
The lecture gives a review of historical development of the air pollution situation in Europe since last century. It is demonstrated that air pollution has changes from easily recognizable smoke damage of trees near certain pollutant sources to a global problem threatening the forests in all of Europe. The state of knowledge and perspectives are discussed.
