Pollution will almost certainly lead to more simplified, and more volatile plant/insect interactions. These, in turn, could contribute to more frequent and widespread episodes of forest decline which are manifestations of complex system dysfunction: i.e. self-promoting cycles of ever increasing energy insufficiency among the dominant primary producers in an ecosystem.
