Abstract
Recent declines in forest vitality in central Europe and eastern North America have promoted interest in methods of assessing tree health. The Europe-wide surveys of tree health using common protocols rely on visual assessment of symptoms in the field. Methods for extending such surveys by using quantitative objective measurements to detect deterioration in tree health before visible symptoms appear are discussed, using physiological measurements of stress responses in trees as examples. Current developments in technology promise the possibility of making useful measurements of tree health in the field.
