Results of poplar breeding investigations during selection, introduction, hybridization in forest-steppe, steppe and semi-desert zones of the USSR's European part are presented. There have been studied natural from diversity in aspen, white and black poplar in forest-steppe. Economically-valuable forms were selected. On the material of poplar 780 variety x sites there were studied regularities of manifestation for phenological development, growth, resistance and timber quality depending on the origin, ecological conditions of cultivation, systematic belonging and individual pecularities in poplar clones and varieties. Bearers of valuable characters have been determined. They can be used in hybridization and when working out poplar economically valuable assortments, Results of one of the greatest in the USSR programmes on poplar hybridization were presented. During its realization 59000 of hybrid seedlings have been received. After long-term testing 135 best hybrids have been selected among them.
