Abstract
This paper reports on research work on nursery, site preparation, planting, and tending techniques undertaken in Dodoma and to a lesser extent in Malya. Exotic tree species commonly planted are Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. and Cassia siamea L. Performance, which is evaluated on the basis of survival and height growth is improved by Ploughing and harrowing on site, large pitting; into which 12 month old seedlings raised in 20 cm long polythene tubes are planted in the first rains. Intensive weeding and termite control are mandatory. The implied increases in establishment and tending costs are expected to be offset by returns from coppice sales. Three activities namely: use of hormones for growth promotion of additional roots assessing the trace element status of the soils in semi-arid Tanzania, and social forestry studies; are recommended for future research.
