The enormous area of wetlands has a great potential for forestry. Forest amelioration in waterlogged areas is part of the normal forestry practices in Fenno-Scandinvia, the Soviet Union, the British Isles and in some parts of the USA. In Canada there are experiments going on, but forest drainage in practice is still scanty. It is estimated that currently only about 14 million hectares of peatlands and wetlands have been drained for forestry in the boreal and temperate zones. More than 90 per cent of this is situation in the Fenno-Scandinavian countries and the Soviet Union. In connection with amelioration activities the environmental aspects have to be considered. More research is needed to promote the use and protection of wetland forests in the tropics.
