Abstract
The possibility of declining yields with successive rotations of fast grown plantations has concerned foresters. Specific examples have been reported this century from some sites in Germany, Denmark and South Australia and very locally in restricted parts of New Zealand and Swaziland. Each of these cases can be largely explained in terms of climatic fluctuations, specific nutrient deficiencies, weed competition effects, severe site disturbance at harvesting, or poor matching of species to site. There is little evidence to support the view that the intensive cultivation of a tree crop itself leads to loss of productivity in the next rotation, even if of the same species.
