In the past different scientists have expressed different opinions about the palaeological development of the natural vegetation of the Steinfeld, a huge grassland area south of Vienna, Austria. Some considered the area, prior to the arrival of neolithic mankind, was more or less densely forested, whereas others suggested it was a grassland throughout the Holocene. Considering an array of potential explanations, we support the latter.
