Abstract
The current age class distributions of forests in eastern Canada point to wood supply deficits for the near future when industrial demands are considered. The importance of the woods industry to Canada's economy invokes to need to develop forest management strategies to ensure a continuous and economical supply of wood. Provincial strategies must be consistent with objectives and reflect the characteristics of the forest as a whole. Two strategies are described: the first advocates protection and harvest of overmature portions of the forest to meet immediate future wood requirements and the second strategy on activities to increase the productivity of younger age classes of forests. This strategy requires commitment of the land owner to all aspects of forest management, particularly in the area of regeneration, tending, inventory, protection and the application of forest science.
