Abstract
A consistent program to artificially regenerate forest lands in western Canada did not begin until after World War II. Since that time there has been a steady growth particularly in British Columbia in the numbers of seedlings planted, the area given site preparation treatments, and the number of plantations receiving post-planting vegetation management. This silviculture has been supported by research designed to develop efficient seedling production and planting scenarios and to estimate and implement the site preparation necessary to permit optimum plantation development. These efforts have been greatly stimulated by joint agreements between the federal and provincial governments to fund the silviculture necessary to return non- restocked backlog lands to full production. Nonetheless serious questions with regard to seedling production and vegetation management remain to be solved.
