Austrian experiences on the field of high-elevation afforestation and preventive regeneration of subalpine forest stands as part of torrent, avalanche and landslide control work in high-mountain regions are dealt with in this paper. It deals in particular with special reforestation and regeneration problems in the subalpine altitudinal zone in the Alps coming from harsh environmental conditions and negative influences like winter-desiccation, snow-blight fungi, snow gliding on steep slopes etc. and describes successful solutions of such problems.
