Abstract
This paper presents the life's work of a man, who significantly left his stamp on the development of forest sciences at the turn of the 20th century: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Adam Schwappach. Born in Bamberg, and attaining his doctorate's degreee in Munich, in 1886 he was appointed to Eberswalde after serving at the way stations of Forstlehranstalt Aschaffenburg (Center of Forest Sciences, Aschaffenburg) and the Hessische Landesuniversität Gießen (State University of Gießen, Hessia). For 45 years, he worked here in a double function at the Forstakademie (Academy of Forestry) and the Forstlichen Versuchsanstalt (Forest Research Center) and gained high scientific acclaim both at home and abroad. Schwappach is the last great encyclopediast of forest sciences. In commemoration of his 150th birthday (November 2, 1851), the Landesforstanstalt Eberswalde (State Forestry Center, Eberswalde) will be hosting a scientific conference on the subject of "Forestry Research - The Basis for future-oriented Commercial Forestry" from May 28-30, 2001.
