  • Abstract
The Forestry Department commenced with their activities in 1902, at the time of when heaths were being afforested on a large scale. Over the decades, conifers (pine) were almost exclusively cultivated due to site conditions and for economical purposes. In the years following World War II, private forest owners increasingly began taking site conditions into consideration and began transforming their woodlands. The public allocations received played an essential role in the transformation process, effecting large investments and growth in afforested areas. When the support measures were extended to include sectors of commercial forestry, the Forestry Associations were then enabled to carry out these silvicultural activities themselves. Currently, more than 800 ha conifer stands annually are being transformed to mixed stands (410,000 ha forested area, total). Forest owners and the Forestry Associations are allocated 700,000 Euro, annually.
