Plantations or young regeneration of Silver Fir (Abies alba) in the North- East of France are frequently attacked by Dreyfusia nordmannianae, an aphid insect which can cause the death of the trees, and against which foresters were hitherto powerless. A trial to compare efficiency of various insecticide treatments was established in the South Vosges. This experiment revealed that a heavily attacked fir plantation can be restored to health using pesticides of the pyrethrinoid group. On the other hand, systemic pesticides of the organophorous group showed no effect against this pest, and did not prevent degradition of the plantation health.
