Abstract
In the 8th century, under the rule of the Umayads, first efforts were made in Egypt to fight against the imminent scarcity of wood. During the caliphate of the Ismaili Fatimids a highly developed forest administration was established, which had in particular to supply the shipyards with timber. After the end of the Fatimid caliphate a decline of the woodlands started, which culminated at the end of the 19th century. But the exemplary handling of trees and forests was continued by the Ismaili community and the Aga Khan Development Network, which promotes forest projects in many countries and also in today's Egypt.
