Abstract
A variety of heavy sawn pine boards is less in demand primarily because the increase in quality requirements are better met with spruce. Producing mass construction wood varieties from heavy pine is unprofitable due to the relatively high prices of round wood and high harvesting costs. In addition, hidden faults such as healed over and heavy braches could occur. The traditional heavy timber varieties, in particular beams, amount to only 10-15 % of the construction lists. In accordance with DIN norms, wood with heavy branches is excluded. Furthermore, despite the higher price, layered spruce planks are increasingly being used, because of greater from stability, lower weight and it is a protective against the European house-borer. In the opinion of the saw-miller, the price of heavy pine should not lay beyond that of size class 2b, it is to be marketable in greater quantities.
