Microbial biomass and colonization by collembolans of soil aggregates of different size (<2mm, 2-4mm, 4-10mm) from a beechwood (Terra fusca) was investigated after exposure at three locations on a basalt-limestone gradient in the field for 6 weeks. Microbial biomass was at a maximum in aggregates <2mm. The collembolan species Megalothorax minimus preferred to colonize cages containing these aggregates.
