From the year 1970 the Institute of Forest Research Athens, in cooperation with the section of reforestations of the central Forest Service started the selection of forest seed stands. The criteria used for the selection of the stands were not different from those recommended by E.E.C. and O.E.C.D. rules. All stands of the native species have been selected in the naturalforests throughout the country. A summary of the selected 63 stands by species and provenance is given in the following table along with the parameters: Latitude, longitude, elevation, mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual rainfall (MAR), summer rainfall (SR), bed rock. In the analytical description of each one stand, the perfecture, country, village, local forest service, in the area of which the stand is found, are also given. The locations of the stands are shown on maps. The regions of provenances are also shown on map. The whole country has been divided in five regions on the basis of the number of biological dry days as follows: Region GR-1/100-150: Means Greek region one which is characterized with 100- 150 biological dry days. Region GR-2/75-100: Means Greek region two with 75- 100 biological dry days. Region GR-3/40-75: Means Greek region three with 40- 75 biological dry days. Region GR-4/1-40: Means Greek region four with 1-40 biological dry days. Region GR-5/0: Means Greek region five with zero biological dry days.
