Even though Durch Elm Disease (DED) has been known in Germany for many decades, there is no overview of the current spreading and seriousness. Thus, for a limited area - the North German "Münsterland" - the present situation was ascertained by surveying all forest offices in this region. Although the disease is widespread, single elms and even whole stands still survive under favorable circumstances. This paper offers guidelines for protecting the trees and some topical results of elm research are discussed.
