Abstract
The paper summarizes the results of Douglas fir introduction into Germany. After a short description of the natural range genetic implication of species introduction are discussed. Genetic variation within provenances and individual adaptability are the bases for survival under changing environmental conditions. The studies using adaptive traits and isozymes show only slight changes of Douglas fir population structure under plantation conditions in Europe, which concern mainly phenological traits. In a second chapter the main results of provenance experiments are outlined. Under European conditions provenances from northern Washington, west of the ridge of the Cascades show high survival, outstanding growth, and high adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions. The best provenances like Darrington, North Mountain, Arlington, Humptulips, Matlock produce three times as much wood under the same site conditions as the poorer provenances. The activities for conservation and utilization of this variability are described. Seed for planting stock should be collected in seed orchards which include the most valuable material tested in Germany. The potential of Douglas fir to contribute to the stabilization of forests under climate change are stressed.
