Abstract
Around a quarter of Finland's surface area consists of state land, mainly forests. These forests are managed by Metsähallitus and its professional employees, numbering 2000, working in different sectors. In state forests, as in the whole of Finland, more wood is produced than removed. The annual increment in the forests managed by Metsähallitus amounts to 7 million cubic meters, while 4.5 million cubic meters are cut each year. The primary objective in forest management is economic, ecological and social sustainability. From the total forest area one half is presently under protection and the other half under multiple use. Some 90 % of the state forests are now certified according to the Finnish Forest Certification System, which was approved by the Council of PEFC this summer. Metsähallitus' business units increased in 1999 to 212.4 Mio Euro, and operating profit to 69.6 Mio Euro.
