Two planting stocks, 2+1 and 1/0 Sitka spruce, Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr., seedlings, were planted in 1980 under a red alder, Alnus rubra Bong., canopy and in an adjacent cleared area, at the University of British Columbia Malcolm Knapp Research Forest in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. This is a report on the growth of these trees and the incidence of spruce weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck, attack on them thoughout the first 8 years. The overstoy shade hypothesis is evluated and a side shading regime proposed.
