The increasingly important role of forests, forestry and wood utilization is described against the background of globalization and the challenges of sustainable development. In particular, the manifold positive effects on the environment are listed such as carbon fixation, energy saving effects, reduction of CO2-emissions, substitution of fossil energies, emissions and materials that take place, beginning with the process of wood formation (by photosynthesis) in the forest up to and including the manufacture of valuable construction products made from wood. At the end of the life span of products and structures made from wood and wood-based materials this positive balance sheet is supplemented by yet another gain in energy through the use of these products as fuel, bringing the CO2-cycle to a full close.
