Abstract
The paper presented deals with the possibility of introducing integrated forest protection against insect pests into the forestry practices. It is concluded that the application of this modern method of pest control still stikes against a lot of obstacles. Forest entomology has obtained a great number of data forest insect pests. However, the process of their knowledge has not yet been completed. A considerable problem lies in the fact that the majority of data on insect pests comes from the phase of their gradation and the basic knowledge on the phase of latency is not available. The basis of integrated pest control consists, however, in insect pest latency. This problem could be solved by the integrated research of forest ecosystems which was launched by the International Biological Programme in the late sixties and by the following Man and the Biosphere Programme. The paper discusses the possibility of studying causes of gradations of some pests from the data obtained during the gradations. This is illustrated on the example of the author's research of Cryptorrhynchus lapathi L., Diprion pini (L.), Euura laeta Zadd. and Euura mucronata Htg. and of the complex of spruce Symphyta. On the example of the research of floodplain forest ecosystems and a man-made Norway spruce forest in an upland region the structure of insects and Arachnoidea is showed during the phase of latency and a recommendation is given for the study of these pests as a basis for the integrated forest production.
