Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate a potential competitive behavior between the ectomycorrhizal fungi Amanita muscaria and Cenococcum geophilum on the root system of Picea abies. For this purpose mixed inoculations have been compared both with pure inoculations of each species and uninoculated control seedlings. The inoculated spruce seedlings produced a significantly higher biomass than the controls in which the highest increase in biomass was found in the sample exclusively inoculated with Amanita muscaria. The frequency of formed mycorrhizae, as compared to the pure samples, was significantly less pronounced in the mixed sample. However, in this mixed sample the root tips were colonized with the same frequency by both mycelia. Moreover, in the Cenococcum geophilum-inocula a highly significant, negative correlation between mycorrhiza frequency and biomass, shoot and root length and the total number of root tips was observed.
