Abstract
Results are given of anatomical, morphological and physiological analyses of seedlings and transplants of montane and high-altitude ecotypes of Norway spruce. The problems were examined in terms of plant growth dynamics, areal proportion of bark, wood and pith in the stem, morphogenesis of the root system, chlorophyll composition and content, water absorption by roots, and transpiration. The effect of He-Ne laser radiation on seed germinative capacity was also studied. It was found that in the first year growth Norway spruce seedlings of montane and high-altitude ecotypes achieved less biometric indices of growth than the controls (from 270 m altitude). In the second and third years of growth the differences disappeared. From the viewpoint of the areal proportion of bark, wood and pith, morphogenesis of the root system, chlorophyll content and composition, water absorption by roots and transpiration rate, there were no marked differences between the plants tested and the controls. He-Ne laser beams were found to be effective in stimulating germinative capacity, especially in seeds with low germinative capacity.
