The objective of this paper is to present a general view on the topic, details of which are presented by various authors in the poster section "Genetic Aspects in Research on Forest Decline" as published in the poster abstracts of the congress. This paper will at first deal with some terms and preliminary remarks and then formulate a basic hypothesis. Then, after methodical remarks, selected results of investigations on genetic structure will be presented and discussed in relation to ecological genetics and research on forest decline.
