The complex reactions and interactions between mycorrhizae and rhizosphere are hidden in the forest and still only limited information is available. No general interpretation can therefore be presented, nor can one single factor be held responsible for the differences in development of mycorrhizal root systems in forest soils. At our present stage of knowledge it appears still necessary to conduct a thorough docomentation and a critical analysis of the phenomena at each forest site, before a decision can be taken about ameliorization if needed. In the following, results from research on forest decline are presented, showing mainly developmental differences of ectomycorrhizae and methods of investigation of importance for further research. The necessity and the aims of future fields of research on mycorrizal root systems in respect to tree decline are also shortly adressed.
