Abstract
As a contribution to the knowledge of the vegetation in the Spessart (Germany) the spruce forests have been investigated. On red sandstone the heath bedstraw-spruce forest occurs as a man-made plantation differing distinctly from the white woodrush-beech forest (Luzulo-Fagetum), which is the natural woody plant community in the Red Sandstone-Spessart. The different site conditions of the heath bedstraw-spruce forest in the upper and lower Spessart are characterized by means of the vegetation.
