Urban trees show many different appearences: like old single trees or heavily stressed street trees, like planted trees in parks and gardens or spontaneous vegetation on abandoned land. Using some examples it is shown that tree ring analysis can be a useful tool for urban ecologists, making it possible to reconstruct the life history of these trees. Not only can the analysis of age structures give useful information for studies of vegetation history, tree rings can also be used as a precise annual chronology, and to assess the effect of natural stand factors and anthropogenic influences on tree growth. Even the stored elements in the tree rings can help to monitor urban environmental quality. Dendroecology therefore can link the various disciplines of urban ecological research.
