Abstract
The characteristics of mountainous forests in Europe, scientific and technical fundaments as well as silvicultural guidelines for treatment of mountain forests are discussed. Restrictions and obligations for management existing in different European countries are compared and possible criteria for assessment of need of silvicultural interventions are presented. New activities in the field of management of mountainous forests are mentioned. Conclusions with respect to silviculture, forest policy, education, and research are drawn.
