  • Abstract
The current status of forestry in Scotland is reviewed in the light of the development this century of plantations which are situated primarily in upland, rather than mountainous, areas. Common silvicultural practices are outlined, from the choice of species through tending to harvesting and restocking, the latter mainly achieved by clearfell and replanting. In addition to plantations, consideration is given to the role of semi-natural woods in Scotland and especially the remnants of the original native pinewoods that still exist. The measures to rejuvenate, conserve and expand these are discussed. The current functions of upland forests in Scotland are summarised and followed by a review of recent policy and practical developments. The conclusion is made that upland forests do function at a variety of levels and that good management to optimise the multi-purpose benefits of these forests is widely encouraged and practised.
